Image:Apple-logo.png The Apple world is buzzing about what is coming down the pipe this Tuesday. Expected to be launched or announced in a couple days at their Let’s Rock event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco on September 9 at 10:00 a.m. are:

  • iTunes 8
Kevin Rose has been Twittering and blogging this week about new visualization features being added, but in addition, Apple is expected to add a "Genius" feature which automatically builds playlists from songs in your library that have similar features, like a Pandora for music you already own. Of course, Genius also includes recommends music you don’t already have and lets you purchase it from the iTunes store, via a handy sidebar. Also expected to be added are HD movie downloads, and a new Grid view that is speculated to be similar to the view used by the Zune desktop software.
  • iPhone 2.1ipod_family
Doesn’t it seem like only a couple of months ago we were excited about 2.0? Well, Apple is already set to release a significant upgrade. The most talked about feature expected to be included is a Push API, which will allow developers of third party applications to deliver updates to the iPhone without the user actually being in the application. This is expected to be a huge boost to IM software on the platform, as well as numerous other applications. Apple is also including additional features that were not even released to developers, which as of yet no one seems to know what that will be. One can always hope for copy & paste.
  • 4th Generation iPod Nano
Are you a big fan of the fatty Nano? Well, you better hurry up and get yours quick because it’s expected to be replaced with a taller, more slimmed down version (think Zune 4/8) that you’ll turn on horizontal to view video content on. Engadget has a "spy" photo.

Seven: One Windows, One Role 0

httpupload.wikimedia.orgwikipediaenee0Windows_logo.png I had hoped that Microsoft would take a role-based approach to Windows 7. But, there won’t be roles, according to a Saturday blog post by Steven Sinofsky, senior veep of the Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group. He gave some pretty good reasons. In the post, Steven explains that customers well received Windows Server 2008’s role-based approach. "The desktop PC (or laptop) is different because there is only a single PC and the roles are not as well defined. Only in the rarest cases is that PC dedicated to a single purpose," Steven writes.
"In nearly every study we have ever done, just about every PC runs at least one piece of software that other people do not run," he continues. "So we should take away from this the difficulty in even labeling a PC as being role specific." Steven regards the PC for the unique device that it is. Most products are created to do one or two things. The PC is unusual in that it’s like a Swiss Army Knife that can do many things pretty well.

Intel releases laptop, desktop SSDs 0

Intel has started shipping its 1.8in and 2.5in 80GB solid-state drives. The chip giant also reiterated its plan to release 160GB versions by the end of the year.
The X18-M and X25-M drives use multi-level cell (MLC) technology, generally held to be slower than drives based on single-level cell designs. Intel promised it will intro SLC SSDs within the next three months, aiming them - and no doubt pricing them - at servers.
